An OpenGL application fails to start using the following error message:

The problem occurs at the source code line:
glutInitDisplayMode(GLUT_DOUBLE | GLUT_ALPHA | GLUT_DEPTH );
but with
glutInitDisplayMode(GLUT_DOUBLE | GLUT_RGB | GLUT_DEPTH );
it works.
My xorg config file contains:
