Once you logged in X blindly as above, you should try:
1) take another machine and log on the first one through ssh
2) enter "DISPLAY=:0 xrandr" to see the available mode and currently
used one (please send the output)
3) change to another mode with something like "DISPLAY=:0 xrandr
--output LVDS --mode 800x600" (assuming you want to change to 800x600 on
the LVDS, i.e. the internal panel of a laptop).
If you don't have another machine for (1), maybe try from a VT console
on the first machine directly, but not sure it works well.
