Looks like the bug was fixed indeed. I'm using xserver-xorg-video-i810
version 2:1.7.2-4 from Etch on the same hardware at the moment, and I
can't reproduce the problem anymore with 1024x768 resolution. (Note
however that my monitor is different from what I used a year ago, and
I don't have access to the old one.)
