Bug#247737: A few observations

I've experienced this bug too. I have a few aditional observations
about it (not sure how to send these directly upstream):

* It used to be caused by ACPI suspends, although this seems to have
stopped happening recently

* It can be fixed by switching to a virtual console and back to X

* It is also triggered by switching my IBM thinkpad x40 to
CRT mode. This is very annoying because jumping to a VC turns CRT mode
off again. No bug-free slideshows!

* I counted the width of the band of garbage memory displayed at the top
of the screen; it's 32 (or maybe 31) pixels. That memory must be used for X
buffers because it's affected by screen updates.
