Oh my. I'm willing to bet this is another CP microcode issue; some cards are known to ship with bad firmware (IIRC), or exist in such a state that they're useless with microcode. This is all a mixture of IIRC and AIUI, and I'll try to test .dfsg when I get home (dialup sucks), but yeah.
