I've heard people who understand X server internals refer to the
existing backing store implementation as something resembling garbage.

Keith Packard's X server work for freedesktop.org is expected to make a
vastly improved backing store implementation available.  As I understand
it, the DAMAGE and XFIXES extensions have much to do with this.

Other folks on the debian-x mailing list (who will see these messages)
may be willing to add more information.  Mine is mostly second-hand.
