I have since removed and re-installed Debian, and am currently using
testing. I have not had the problem since.

I did some hunting through mailing lists at the time and found similar
reports (e.g., for BSD) from years ago, but without any real resolution.
Anyway, since I no longer have the problem and since I have no recipe to
reproduce it, you might as well close the bug report.
