http://www.debian.org/Bugs/Developer#severities says about "important":| a bug which has a major effect on the usability of a package, without | rendering it completely unusable to everyone.
The bug makes xdm rather unusable for xdmcp indirect queries. There is no workaround but to recompile a fixed xdm (BTW, is there an easy way to recompile xdm without a time consuming "make World"?).
I've considered this "a major effect on the usability ... without rendering it completely unusable to everyone". I have to admit that "major" might no longer be appropriate nowadays with pure X-terminals getting more and more out of fashion :) Alas, I still have to support some of them ...
Feel free to lower the severity. Cheers, Enrik
