Do you have another computer you could use to ssh to the machine that
hangs while the X server is running?

If so, could you use that other computer to run the following command
after the you start the X server on the machine with the problem?:

$ tail -f /var/log/XFree86.0.log

I am curious to know if there are any "(EE)" (error) messages that
appear in the log before the system hangs.
