The "pl" keyboard layout does not follow the "Polish programmers" [1]
keyboard layout convention, commonly used here - the zacute and Zacute
ISO-8859-2 characters should be mapped to AltGr-X and AltGr-Shift-X
(X, not Q) respectively.

Also, it works only when Shift is pressed after AltGr (not the other
way around), and Shift doesn't reverse the effect of CapsLock.
That's all correct in /usr/lib/kbd/keytables/pl.map (kbd-0.91-12).

[1] Almost all keyboards used here are standard US keyboards.
Polish diacritical characters are entered using AltGr-letter
(with one exception: zacute = AltGr-X, because AltGr-Z is already
taken: zabovedot). We also have the "Polish typewriter" (M$-DOS
"keyb pl") keyboard layout, but there are very few such keyboards
(and they are damn hard to use for most of us computer geeks).
Windows supports both conventions.

Hello,

I checked current xfree97 and it seems that the problems you reported
a very long time ago have been fixed upstream in symbols/pc/pl:
  * zacute and Zacute are mapped to AltGr-X and AltGr-Shift-X
  * CapsLock work as expected

Shift has indeed to be pressed after AltGr, but this is not a limitation
of the pl layout, it happens for all the other layouts I looked into.
I am closing this bug.

Denis
