I've installed recently all sid packages and have the same problem:
the key <> doesn't work anymore. (I use Gnome 2).

The problem is identified and I would like to describe here:

when I use the "dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86" and ask for a "pc105" 
 geometry, the program put a "pc104" in the XF86Config-4 file.

So I just modify the XF86Config file and everything works now fine.

Hope this helps. If not, or if I'm wrong, please let me know why and how 
to tune correctly the stuff.
