That's "interesting" - I also built this for woody and it appears to have
completed successfully (certainly there was no error like this in the
output I captured with script).

I don't know.  A couple of datapoints from my system:

1) standard woody, except for X (currently I have 4.2.0-pre installed)

2) I took particular notice of the build-depends and have all of those
packages installed.

3) I noticed on a previous build attempt that fakeroot breaks the
"debian/rules build" step (but is required for "debian/rules binary) but,
IIRC, the error was quite different from this.
