Neomagic NM 2200: X server 4.1.0.1 terminates after initial screen

I have recently upgraded my VAIO PCG-F350 with an NM2200 Neomagic
controller to the latest unstable (from one that was a few months
old).

XFree 4 used to work but doesn't any more.

It terminates after briefly showing the default X background (the
black-white pseudo-grey background with mouse cursor in the middle).

The crash happens with the audio driver module nm256 installed
or not installed at boot time.

Attached are the XFree86.0.log file and the XF86Config-4 file.

Console messages are some from XFree86.0.log and then the line:
waiting for X server to shut down
