Did you look at the bugs against sympathy in the BTS?
You'll see in #1115856 that I am RFAing this package.

Mythic are migrating away from sympathy and don't intend to pick up
this work.
And, I wrote:

Unless we have some sign that anyone actually thinks this program is
worth saving, I suggest we allow it to gently rot, and RM later in the
forky cycle.

Did you do this?
git cat-file commit 1069689de5ddf9ea55402544ad031cf7db85eb37
It shows that the committer and author lines in the header are
mangled. There's an additional angle bracket at the start of the name
part.
Fixing this would involve a history rewrite. If you would like to do
that, you may go ahead. If you do so please file a bug against
dgit-infrastructure asking for us to rewrite the history on
*.dgit.d.o.
But, I would recommend not bothering. I'm sure there are other parts
of Debian that would benefit much more from your efforts.
Ian.
