Description: monochrome emoji font from Google
Noto is a collection of font families, each visually harmonized across
scripts.
.
The name "Noto" is short for "No Tofu", describing the aim of covering
all living Unicode scripts.
.
Tofu (豆腐) is Japanese jargon for unicode replacement character ""
(U+FFFD) often displayed as replacement for unassigned or unknown
characters.
.
This package contains the monochrome ("black and white") emoji font.
Both an OpenType variable font and traditional static font files are
provided.
.
Please install fonts-noto-color-emoji instead if you want the color
font used on "stock" Android devices.
Other Info
----------
Notably, Google has refused to provide the source for this font since
its introduction in 2022. This is disappointing since Google has been
a major contributor to open source fonts and tooling. Source code is
provided for other Noto fonts including the popular color emoji font
(packaged in Debian as fonts-noto-color-emoji).
There is a Github repo that is linked to in several places but the
repo is private: https://github.com/googlefonts/emoji-bw
Therefore, although this font is licensed under a compatible open
source license, I believe the font violates the Debian Free Software
Guidelines #2 which requires source code. Consequently, this package
will be uploaded to non-free. We hope that Google will eventually
release the source code and this package can be transferred to
Debian main.
This package will be maintained by the Debian Fonts Task Force.
Packaging will be at
