once we had a discussion about the licensing restriction of locfit.
I'd like to point your attention to a Github issue about this:

While it seems that Steve M. Kim (user name chairmank on Github) has
simply copied the code to Github that might be some place to join the
effort to find the original copyright holder Catherine Loader and
clarify the license.
