The Debian GNOME team is skipping mozjs38 and going straight to mozjs52. mozjs52 is part of GNOME 3.26 and is the JavaScript engine from Firefox 52 ESR, the only ESR supported at this time.
The packaging is derived from Debian's mozjs24 packaging.
The debian/copyright is from Firefox but with parts that don't apply to this smaller source package removed.
I'm also interested in a newer version of mozjs (for cinnamon), please let me know if you need a hand packaging it (and/or if you are at DebConf).
