Mastodon is a free, open-source social network server. A decentralized solution
to commercial platforms, it avoids the risks of a single company monopolizing
your communication. Anyone can run Mastodon and participate in the social
network seamlessly.

More and more people are switching from Twitter to Mastodon these days so
various organisms are deploying new instances.
There are a few tutorials about how to install Mastodon on Debian, but having a
Debian package would make things a lot easier.
