Description : chess engine for use with xboard

Arasan is a chess program for Windows, Linux and Mac OS.

Arasan has both a native user interface (for Windows only) and a console-based
chess engine for use with Winboard or xboard. Arasan also works with Arena,
another free chess interface, and with UCI-compatible programs like Fritz and
Chessbase.

Arasan includes an opening "book" with over 600,000 moves.

Since version 14.0, the Arasan chess engine has been licensed under the MIT
License.

This package includes the code for accessing the Gaviota endgame tablebases,
which the upstream developer has packaged separately. It also includes his
large opening book, which he has likewise packaged separately. The simple
3-man tablebases are available in the debian package gaviotatb. More
tablebases can be provided by the user and linked to the program. Arasan also
accepts the Syzygy tablebases, which the user will need to supply if desired.
This package does not include the code for accessing the Nalimov tablebases
because the license is not compatible with debian.

---------

This is a strong chess engine in the same ranks as Crafty and Stockfish. It is
a familiar and old adversary of mine from Windows.

This version depends on Xboard for its GUI interface.

I have received permission from Jon Dart to create a Debian package. When I
contacted him about an issue with the program, his response was very quick and
helpful.

I plan to maintain it by dealing with packaging issues myself. I plan on
investigating reported program bugs myself, but will probably need to refer
them to Jon Dart for solution.
