I fully agree with Andreas (I guess, you quoted him, right?).I think that all previous uploads to Debian should be in the repo. Plus your changes.
If you just copy your changes on top and do a single bulk commit or if you want to start at some earlier place in history and then import some of your and Torsten patches separately on top of that, I don't mind.
