I suggest to expand the acronym, something like this:

C++ interface to the PNG (Portable Network Graphics) library

> PNG reference implementation library.

And:

PNG++ aims to provide simple yet powerful C++ interface to libpng, the
Portable Network Graphics (PNG) reference implementation library.
