I think the best way forward is to head towards team maintenance
anyway, then we can all collaborate. If at any time Carl wants to
take over, I am sure none of us will put a brick in his way.

I already pushed the fix to git.debian.org for that.

Well, just create a new stanza debian/* and remove all copyright
holders but you.
