Yes, although I think it'd be more complex than that as there need to be 
binaries for how ever many libdb versions Debian is supporting in a release.

I'm just interested in doing the work.  Unfortunately in testing my package I 
(as you thought might be the case when we discussed it on IRC) found some 
significant compatibility problems with the current upstream code and 
libdb4.5 and 4.6.  Specifically the threaded transaction example in the 
upstream package just hangs.

I've looked into it a big and the upstream code is using some old bits of API 
(one piece I found was deprecated in db 4.0 and removed in 4.5).  This is 
going to be a significant piece of work.

I'd be glad to place whatever I manage out of this in the team.
