I'd be happy if you'd maintain cplay (and I can sponsor you). The onl
question I really have is how good your Python is (afaik you aren't a
big Python fan).

True, that might be another problem. I modified get_tag in cplay to
return UTF-8 but then something in cplay broke so obviously some work
remains even if the Python bindings were linked against libncursesw.
