 Just for completeness' sake, here's the error:

 checking for preempt patch... yes
 configure: error: unsupported kernel configuration : CONFIG_PREEMPT
 make[2]: *** [config.status] Error 1

 oprofile checks explicitly for the preempt patch and won't build if
 it's in use.

 I'll just compile another kernel an try again.
