That's what I said. The issue is to do with advice in the manpage
about how to use update-updmap in postrm and postinst scripts.
Probably just ignoring that advice is the easy thing, but I want
to talk about it with Atsuhito.

Yes, probably true. (The AFMs are the font metrics.)
FYI, these packages are going to be pretty big. Without the AFMs,
the package is around 57 MB,~59 MB installed . The AFM package
will probably be a lot smaller, but the AFMs themselves are 53 MB
ungzipped.
