Bug#173427: ITP: epiphany-browser -- GNOME web browser with simple interface

Package: wnpp
Version: unavailable; reported 2002-12-17
Severity: wishlist

* Package name    : epiphany-browser
  Version         : 0.2.20021217
  Upstream Author : Marco Pesenti Gritti <marco@it.gnome.org>
* URL             : http://epiphany.mozdev.org/
* License         : GPL
  Description : GNOME web browser with simple interface

Epiphany means "An intuitive grasp of reality through something (as an
event) usually simple and striking"

Epiphany is a simple yet powerful GNOME web browser targetted at
non-technical users. It's principles are simplicity and standards
compliance. Simplicity is achieved by a well designed user interface and
reliance on external applications for performing external tasks (such as
reading email). Simplicity should not mean less powerful. Standards
compliance is achieved on the html side by using the Gecko
rendering engine, as developed for the Mozilla browser; and on the user
interface side by closely following the GNOME Human Interface Guidelines
(HIG) and by close integration with the GNOME desktop. Preferences will
be designed following the new GNOME policy.

[Notes:
- epiphany package name already taken, so using epiphany-browser.
- epiphany is being developed by Marco Pesenti Gritti, the man who made
  galeon so successful. Recently, he tried to enforce HIG on galeon, by
  taking such actions as simplifying the menus and moving mime handling
  entirely to gnome. Many people were reluctant to change (many others
  agreed completely with him) and so there was some flamage which
  resulted in zero progress and Marco's decision to resign as lead
  maintainer. Galeon will now be re-introducing some of those old
  preferences, probably including the return of the 'tools' menu.
