According to the example at the URL given:

http://www.ivarch.com/programs/pv.shtml

It will display a completion estimate for pipelines where one end is a file,
and according to the man page:

http://www.ivarch.com/programs/quickref/pv.shtml

it is also possible to specify the expected size manually.  In other cases,
it cannot guess the size.
