Ah, good point :)

Well, whereami doesn't have hooks in if-up.d and if-down.d, because it plays
a part in configuring the interface, too.  We have considered improving its
integration, but it hasn't been done yet.

I think you're right, that it would be better to integrate via ifup/down and
its mechanisms, and hooking into miid would be possibly easier but not
really the best solution.
