GCIDE is the Gnu version of The Collaborative International
Dictionary of English, and is licensed under the GPL. It is based on,
and includes the complete text of, Webster's Revised Unabridged
Dictionary Version published 1913, which makes up the dict-web1913
package.
Since the 1913 Webster is almost 90 years old, it is lacking in
definitions of many modern words, and modern senses of older words.
With the permission of the WordNet group of the Cognitive Science
Department of Princeton University, many definitions from WordNet
versions 1.5 and 1.6 have been incorporated into the CIDE.
The GCIDE also incorporates some definitions from the Century
Dictionary (published in 1906) and is supplemented by many additional
words and word senses contributed by volunteers. (The editor is also
the most prolific volunteer.) The GCIDE has about 25% more terms
indexed than the 1913 Webster.
The raw data files are available on ftp.gnu.org, in the directory
/gnu/dictionary. The latest version on the gnus site is 0.43, which
is almost one year old. I am packaging 0.44, which I have obtained
directly from the editor. (He is somewhat casual about uploads, but
0.44 will eventually be on ftp.gnu.org.)
dict-gcide will conflict, provide and replace dict-web1913. I
plan to upload a dummy version of dict-web1913 that will depend on
dict-gcide to smooth the upgrade path.
