It might be your opinion that GNU/Linux is not about choice, but it is
often said and the reason why many  people use it.
Besides that one can choose between different solutions for quite a
lot of problems (GUI's, editors, compilers, etc). Else
update-alternatives wouldn't make any sense at all.  
I assume you are aware of that.
