My apologies for the delay!\n\nDetails of the outcome an d how various options were voted are available at \n\nhttp://www.debian.org /vote/2008/vote_003\n\nThe winning option was number 5\, "Assume blobs comp ly with GPL unless proven\notherwise"\, the full text of which is appended below.\n\nSince the election concluded\, several developers have asked for some statement\nfrom the DPL and/or Secretary as to what this result really means. Steve and\nI have discussed it\, and we think it's pretty clear. This result means that\nthe Debian Lenny release can proceed as the release team has intended\, with\nthe kernel packages currently in the archive.\n\ nBdale\n\n\n Assume blobs comply with GPL unless proven otherwise\n\n 1 . We affirm that our Priorities are our users and the free software \ncomm unity (Social Contract #4)\;\n\n 2. We acknowledge that there is a lot of progress in the kernel firmware \n issue\; most of the issues tha t were outstanding at the time of the \n last stable release have be en sorted out. However\, new issues in the \n kernel sources have c ropped up fairly recently\, and these new issues \nhave not yet been addres sed\;\n\n 3. We assure the community that there will be no regressions in the \nprogress made for freedom in the kernel distributed by Debian rela tive \nto the Etch release in Lenny (to the best of our knowledge as of 1 \ nNovember 2008)\;\n\n 4. We give priority to the timely release of Lenn y over sorting every \nbit out\; for this reason\, we will treat removal of sourceless firmware\nas a best-effort process\, and deliver firmware as pa rt of Debian Lenny\nas long as we are legally allowed to do so\, and the fi rmware is \ndistributed upstream under a license that complies with the DFS G.\n\n-----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE-----\nVersion: GnuPG v1.4.9 (GNU/Linux)\nCom ment: Processed by Mailcrypt 3.5.8+ <http://mailcrypt.sourceforge.net/>\n\n iD8DBQFJYp2nZKfAp/LPAagRAlJrAJ0Wdji75LonKCG9Vuj38Bdbb/lHpgCfR/Ij\n5Ldf00T3S O8cXn2TMPOLZcg=\n=Am85\n-----END PGP SIGNATURE-----\n\n\n-- \nTo UNSUBSCRIB E\, email to debian-devel-announce-REQUEST@lists.debian.org\nwith a subject of "unsubscribe".
