I always use the List Archive format,
https://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2023/03/msg00022.html
for a few reasons:
It's short and manageable, and doesn't have unusual characters,
it's easy to see typos, and it gives an idea of how up-to-date
or ancient the reference is.
Some Message-ID references are very long, anything up to about
160 characters, and are not easy to check when cut and pasted
into a browser due to their random nature.
But the main reason is List Archive formats /always work/,
whereas Message-ID ones occasionally fail, and that is
very frustrating. (You'll see the reason below.)
Example: try and find the reference above by means of its
Message-ID:
https://lists.debian.org/msgid-search/Y/+tJdQluFDMC4Ci@use
or any of these not-quite-random messages from some of our
frequent contributors, who might recognise their domains:
https://lists.debian.org/msgid-search/YC/JJ2xt1K9aK/WN@randomstring.org
https://lists.debian.org/msgid-search/Yg/2TR54+5DbIOfm@einval.com
https://lists.debian.org/msgid-search/ZPJmz/DZIqTk2Kol@wooledge.org
https://lists.debian.org/msgid-search/Zw/J2EtMIHkX3Tzr@phare.normalesup.org
https://lists.debian.org/msgid-search/aTvGPLkp3WK1/Pg+@tuxteam.de
https://lists.debian.org/msgid-search/aXIoyejZ/+je5vhd@mail.bitfolk.com
Cheers,
David.
