$ apt-cache show gcc-doc
N: Can't select versions from package 'gcc-doc' as it is purely virtual
N: No packages found

which means absolutely nothing to me :(

At least that does. I *like* not having non-free software enabled but
I _do_ want man pages, so .. uhmm.. how to tell if that's the problem?
This is a [relatively] new laptop with an nvidia card & I already
enabled the non-free category:

$ cat /etc/apt/sources.list
#deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 12.9.0 _Bookworm_ - Official amd64
NETINST with firmware 20250111-10:54]/ trixie contrib main
non-free-firmware

deb https://deb.debian.org/debian/ trixie main non-free-firmware
deb-src https://deb.debian.org/debian/ trixie main non-free-firmware

deb https://security.debian.org/debian-security trixie-security main
non-free-firmware
deb-src https://security.debian.org/debian-security trixie-security
main non-free-firmware

# trixie-updates, to get updates before a point release is made;
# see https://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/debian-reference/ch02.en.html#_updates_and_backports
deb https://deb.debian.org/debian/ trixie-updates main non-free-firmware
deb-src https://deb.debian.org/debian/ trixie-updates main non-free-firmware

# how else to get the nvidia-detect script?
deb https://deb.debian.org/debian/ trixie non-free
deb https://security.debian.org/debian-security trixie-security non-free
deb https://deb.debian.org/debian/ trixie-updates non-free
