Since the package just deletes those extraneous files, it does have
occasional undesired side-effects, such as if you try to use the md5sums
files in /var/lib/dpkg/info to check for integrity (I used to run such
a script to detect corruption, which was sadly frequent on those USB
flash thingies).

 Thanks for the info - I didn't know about debsums (if that was what you were using)
