I myself explored this way successfully about 18 years ago:

I have noticed

    apt show k3b
    [...]
    Depends: [...] wodim | cdrskin [...]

Changelog entry:

k3b (0.12.17-4) unstable; urgency=low

  * Allow the use of cdrskin as an alternative to wodim (closes: #398398)

Can the following be a better workaround than setting wodim SUID bit?

    apt install cdrskin wodim-

If it works then I would consider changing order of alternatives in "Depends" in favor of the actively maintained package:

cdrskin | wodim

It seems, brasero has no such an alternative.
