Perhaps you may setup forwarding a copy of messages to your primary mail
account, so will be unnecessary to be always logged in to another account.
Have you enabled IMAP in Gmail preferences? I configured Gmail account
perhaps before some special treatment of Gmail was added to Thunderbird,
so it is a generic IMAP account. Later I created application password in
Google account settings (it requires enabling of 2 factor
authentication) since I prefer to keep JS disabled in Thunderbird, so
OAuth (or something similar used by Gmail) does not work.
Thunderbird account wizard has an option to specify all configuration
options manually instead of autodiscovery/autoconfiguration. I have
never tried to add several Gmail accounts to the same Thunderbird
profile. As a troubleshooting step, I would consider a separate
temporary Thunderbird profile for the new Gmail account.
Unlike Gmail, other mail providers with IMAP support may offer Sieve
server-side filtering. Text configuration file may be more convenient in
comparison to GUI dialogues to add filters.
