I expect that we will not learn much more than that a 7 year old
workaround for Ubuntu is suddenly needed with Debian on your machine.
Actually the setuid solution is much older than that. Twenty years
ago it was the usual way to make CD burning possible for normal users.

The impact of the problem seems somewhat unpredictable.
See the last comment on the page where you found the workaround:
  "What's bizarre is that in my case the issue only happens with my
   USB Iomega CD-RW drive. Doesn't happen with my other drives.
   Fixes the issue though."
