I had looked at "kate -b" before I posted here. The documentation says: "If using an already running Kate instance, block until it exits, if URLs given to open". I read that and thought, "Well that's irrelevant, since I won't be using an already-running instance; I'll be starting a new instance". But perhaps it means something different from the way I'm reading it.
I have had enough of this for today (along with fixing other things that broke with the upgrade yesterday); I've made myself a TODO to investigate "kate -b" when I'm feeling fresher.
