Ah! Doesn't seem to be a clear license in the current github README.md,
as mentioned in LICENSE.txt of the github repo and there are no
disclaimers and pointers on the original home page which has 1998 as the
latest date.

The github README says this:

I remember xv as *the* unix/linux image viewer of the 1990-ies.
