Good question.
Maybe it's needed to get some of the console output during some part of
the boot? Maybe it's needed only for some nVidia boards and it was
easier to do it for all of them?
I think I'd try:
- remove those firmware files (presumably some `apt remove foo-firmware`).
- rebuild one of your initrd.img (make sure you still have more than
one so you can revert to the other working one in case of problem).
- re-install the `foo-firmware`.
- reboot using that "slim" initrd.img.
