CUPS --- only partly working

short story:
using Atril Document Viewer on a 12 page PDF I only get the First Page...
however Using Libre Office Draw I do get all pages

using aptitude show cups I went through the list of Depends, Recommends, 
and Suggests
I installed everything that was not already there.

No joy, same result
