lightdm-gtk-greater config file contains enough comments. lightdm.conf has some comments as well. You may experiment with x-session-manager Debian alternative. I do not use SDDM or GDM due to some missed features.

You wrote just that VT and DM screens are shifted. Do you mean that Xorg is able to guess proper video mode while Wayland compositors used by GDM and SDDM are confused by your DVI to VGA adapter? Perhaps you may configure them to use X session instead.
