Indeed they store their firmware in an onboard flash memory, but there's
a wide variety of "flash memory", and the flash memory used to store
a small amount of code for a firmware is fairly different from the flash
memory used to store the GBs of data in a modern SSD, because the design
constraints are very different w.r.t to:
- Frequency of writes.
- Importance of speed when writing.
- Importance of the cost per byte.
- ...
