I have a Dell Inspiron somethingorother. It has a lighted keyboard. For a long time I thought it didn't work in Linux because the kb would be on in the BIOS but go off when the kernel booted. It turns out if you hit the magic keystroke (Fn+F10? Check your function keys.) it comes back on. Maybe yours is something simple like that.
