Heck, the "disk people" themselves are schizophrenic, since they bunch their blocks in binary too (512, 4k -- uh 4kiB), rumours have it that SSD erase blocks are also powers-of-two sized. So... The best we can do at the moment is to use the iB suffix in cases where the context doesn't help enough (in most cases it does: human language is like that). Past experience shows that we'll live with this for a while (watch the US still on their Imperial measures, while the UK has, mostly, switched to metrics -- oh, the irony).
