I wound up, after some fumbling, to set up everything using some basic info from HP documentation that came with the printer. I used Firefox to go to the network address of my printer and it magically showed me the proper setup screen where I was able to choose the settings I wanted.

I have tested all the desired MFP modes and can print from my PC as well as from my iPhone and iPad, and my wife can, too.

The only scanner program that works for me is XSane, which also worked for my old printer.

I use a program called simple-scan, it works great! I highly recommend giving it a try. It is packaged and available through Debian Main repo.

So far I cannot get scanning or copying to use the ADF in two-sided mode.

But I can use CLI 'lpr' now successfuly on pdf files, including two-sided printing.

BTW, one big downside of the printer is Tray 1 doubles as the access to changing the toner cartridges--and it is on the rear of the printer!  I'm going to live with it, but, among other things, I would have at least named it Tray 2!

I can live with it now, but I wish I had bought another brand.
