My personal experience of USB hubs, is unreliability - sometimes they
work, and, sometimes they do not - probably about 50% chance of them
working.

Same here. For MIDI/music and real-time control applications you will find higher-end more expensive hubs with spec'ed higher aggregate bandwidth. I recently purchased a 7-port one to attach synth keyboards talking to Bitwig's DAW.
