I just bought a new printer, an HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 4301fdw, to replace my nine-year old HP MFP black and white laser printer (which was always connected directly by wire to my home network).
My old printer served me well, especially after I discovered the HP developers site and its code for Linux use.
Now I am trying their latest code and having problems getting it to work smoothly. The latest code doesn't work correctly (two other users had posted a work-around for Ubuntu but it failed for me), so I had to use the C/Bash/Python code archive to compile and install the CUPS and other ways to advertise the printer on the network.
I can now use it to do what I need it to do, but it's not very easy for non-techies like my wife or guests to use because of several things:
1. Three devices are shown (CUPS, Bonjour, etc.) but only one works (I know which one that is only by trial and error).
2. The default is for color printing, and I would like it to be non-color.
I have looked at the GitHub repo of <
https://github.com/OpenPrinting/cups-snap> and wonder if anyone has tried using it on Debian 11 (or any other version). It looks like that's worth trying--in the worst case I could always delete it and go back to the current (ugh) solution.
BTW, I put the 'HP Smart' app on my wife's phone and the new printer works fine with my current setup (if you know which printer to select).
