Of course, such manual install of `.deb` files means that you won't
automatically get future updates, e.g. to fix security bugs.

Given our friends at Brother don't have any repositories at all, this is
somewhat a moot point.

To add insult to injury, such `.deb` files often contain proprietary code,
of course.

Nobody said Brother's printer/scanner driver was open source in the
first place.

Nevertheless, the reminders are spot-on, for potential buyers to
bear in mind. Informed consumers and that.

They're also 32-bit only, requiring the user to add this architecture (and to install 32-bit versions of basic libraries such as libc).

Fortunately, most printers nowadays do not require proprietary drivers, they support the "driverless" approach: https://wiki.debian.org/CUPSDriverlessPrinting (Which should really be called "Universal Driver", but I digress.)
